Paraquat is used across the United States and increasingly common as plant resistance to other herbicides like potentially cancer-causing Roundup has grown. Paraquat is manufactured by many different companies and sold under many brands, and is commonly marketed under the trade name Gramoxone.

In the United States, due to its toxicity, paraquat is available for use only by commercially licensed users.

Both herbicides had inhibitory effects, but Roundup was the more active. At 80 ppm it reduced the growth rates of four isolates by 50–55%, whilst Gramoxone W at 80 ppm produced a 25–40% reduction. Roundup at 80 ppm reduced spore formation by 90 % but Gramoxone W was ineffective.

The glaring irony in this fact is that the weed killer is banned in both China and Switzerland. And although Syngenta makes Paraquat, it's Chevron USA, Inc. that has the license to make and sell the herbicide in the U.S. under the brand name Gramoxone.

The product, which is a restricted use pesticide, contains nearly 44% paraquat dichloride, which makes it very dangerous, as even one sip of Gramoxone can be fatal, particularly for children. For this reason, if you are a certified applicator of paraquat, you must keep it in a locked area.

Even ingesting small to medium amounts of paraquat can lead to fatal poisoning. Within several weeks to several days after ingesting a small amount, a person may experience lung scarring and the failure of multiple organs. This includes heart failure, respiratory failure, kidney failure, and liver failure.

The good news is that Paraquat is not something you can obtain easily. It's not something you can buy over the counter; you can't get it at Lowe's or Home Depot, or you certainly shouldn't be able to get it there. And it's not to be used for home landscaping, weed control on your lawns, nothing like that.

Better known as Gramoxone, Paraquat is a commonly used and readily available herbicide in Jamaica. It is also one of, if not the most common poisonings that occur in dogs.
